Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in implementing video review technology.
Replay systems are set to arrive at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.
Competitors will gain the right to challenge certain rulings from the official, following the practice already in use at both the US Open and the Aussie major.
This innovation will be operational on Centre Court and Court One throughout the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.
This move follows just a year after the AELTC rolled out ELC, which terminated the longstanding role of line officials.
Reviewable Decisions
Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the call of the ELC system, but they can ask for the official to review specific decisions, such as:
- If a ball has double-bounced.
- Whether a ball touched an opponent's racquet or person during play.
- Possible hindrance end of a rally.
Importantly, there is no cap on the amount of reviews a competitor can ask for.
Practical Application
An illustrative case took place in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against his opponent.
The British player conceded it was a difficult call for the official, but believed his opponent had "played the rules effectively."
The umpire watched a video and determined Draper was guilty of hindrance, awarding the point to his opponent.
Growing Trend
Video reviews aren't exclusive to major tournaments. It was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews in place at all of its tournaments.
Other Changes
Another change at The Championships this year involves the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.
This addresses situations where the crowd have sometimes been unsure whether a ball was out or in.
Finally, with precisely 100 days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have further announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
