No former leader would have risked – genuinely, no other president would have contemplated – unilaterally destroying significant portions of the presidential residence to build a Versailles-style party room, with the active collaboration of some of the richest Americans, almost all of whom have business with the government.

As bewildering as it is to watch the leader try to upend the old idea of democracy and exchange it with its direct contrary, there exists a significant segment among Americans who wouldn't consider it entirely new. This includes individuals like us – among senior generations a near majority – who were educated within mainstream Protestant traditions.
We have witnessed over the years while conservative evangelical congregations transformed the Christ we learned about into the total contrary of our understanding of him. Essentially, they turned a figure of affection into a symbol of animosity who endorses precisely the cruelties that he denounced in the Gospel; this has happened more slowly, through multiple decades instead of months, yet it remains unsettling via comparable methods, a bewildering emotional blow for numerous individuals.
A Harmful Christianity Gains Ground
Therefore allow me to outline the Christ from my childhood, because theoretically Jesus is the center of Christian religion, and given that the quickly increasing segment within America may possess limited understanding regarding him because they identify as skeptics or agnostics or nones. The evident and straightforward fact that the Jesus of the gospels calls for a form of extreme compassion focused on the impoverished has consistently rendered the Christian faith somewhat of a controversial faith: engaging for the populace, but due to its natural unconventionality needing to be restrained. During the 1950s it was contained via weakening – The Protestant faith was so prevalent that it essentially blessed current circumstances.
A Battle for the Finest Among Us
So I have been inspired to see the steadfast resistance to Trump develop over the last twelve months. It has served as great solace to assist in constructing the movement that has protested openly via continuous gatherings, and seems to have inspired voters to show up in significant amounts during minor elections. We must have to persist with it, and in the same spirit, with American flags during all protests and requests to the best parts in US history.
