‘Online Monitoring’: The Consumer Goods Giant Looks to Exploit Vaseline’s Viral TikTok Trend.
Originally found over 150 years ago in the oil fields of Pennsylvania, the modest tin of Vaseline may not seem like an clear candidate for online content feeds.
Nonetheless, its ascent as a viral TikTok topic has thrust it into the lead of an advertising revolution, where major corporations are spending big on content creators and devoting less capital to promoting products in conventional outlets.
The Path from Petroleum to Platforms
The petroleum jelly was first manufactured in the 1870s by scientist Robert Cheeseborough, who saw laborers rubbing their skin with a byproduct of the drilling process. Today, a spree of amateur-created clips have documented the product’s widespread use in “everyday tips”.
Promoted as a fix for dirty sneakers or making fragrance last longer, as well as a fix for noisy doorways. It has even been deployed to combat the nuisance of chip seasoning clinging to fingers.
Leveraging the Buzz
Detecting the product’s new life online, strategists within the corporation amplified the hacks by asking their own scientists to test them and providing creators with the outcome data.
Assertions that it diminished the sting of chili on the mouth were validated. This was also the case for ideas it could extend fragrance and revive leather bags. Suggestions it could bleach teeth or extend lashes were disproven.
The ‘Social Listening’ Strategy
Outdoor advertising and television commercials would once have formed the bulk of its promotional efforts. Yet this viral episode has led decision-makers to dramatically increase investment in content creators.
This monitoring of online platforms to guide corporate planning has been dubbed “social listening”. Fernando Fernández, freshly instated, has stated the intention is to spend a full fifty percent of its huge ad budget on social media content.
Evolving With Audience Behavior
A leading Unilever executive, who is spearheading the social media effort, said the company was simply adapting to new ways of engaging audiences. She said participating on platforms “without dampening the fun” was paramount.
“What is the key to genuine brand integration? This remains our core objective as brands, since the era of community gossip and talking about what they used.
“We are witnessing a departure from a broadcast model, where we would just transmit messages … Now it’s many conversations, diverse communities. Changes in digital feeds means that these communities feel niche, yet they are vast.
“Ensuring your product is discussed by consumers, mentioned by individuals, this builds credibility and connection. Content makers are key. We’re really scaling this advocacy model.”
A Seismic Media Shift
The approach indicates seismic changes occurring in how media is consumed, with Gen Z and millennial audiences spending more time on social media platforms than television, magazines or radio.
The transition is visible in drops in TV and print advertising. Within the United Kingdom, ad revenues for primary networks have fallen by more than £600m in real terms since 2019.
The Creator Economy Boom
This further signifies a media convergence as corporations essentially turn into content studios, partnering with a multitude of digital creators to enhance their items.
An industry expert from a leading agency said: “Clearly, there is a migration of viewers from conventional channels and their time is increasingly on Instagram, TikTok and YouTube than they are consuming linear broadcasts or printed matter.
“Numerous corporations inform us consumers have more faith in suggestions from the creators they engage with over traditional advertisements. This is a persistent pattern.”
He said brands could also save money by targeting content creators over expensive broadcast campaigns, which also permits simpler message refinement to see what works.
This strategy is expanding. Promotional expenditure on influencer marketing is growing fourfold quicker than the broader media sector. Across the United States, it has more than doubled since 2021 and is expected to hit multi-billion dollar sums in 2025.
The Enduring Power of Broadcast
Despite the huge changes, experts said they believed TV advertising still had a prominent role to play, as networks still held the capability to drive countrywide discourse.
She added: “A top-tier ROI marketing event is still the Super Bowl. It’s not about those broadcasters saying: ‘We are no longer pertinent.’ The focus is on who seizes focus … I believe there is absolutely a role for them.”
