Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Remarks

The English opener Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of comments made by captain Ben Stokes regarding the dressing room as no place for "weak men".

Stokes delivered this message in multiple conversations following England's defeat in the second Ashes versus the Australians earlier this month.

Ahead of the third Test, where the visitors are staring at a series loss at the earliest opportunity, Stokes stated he had let his sentiment to "drift around" among the playing group.

"I have completed all the talking over the past two days that I needed to have done," said Stokes.

However, after the opener made 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the press with some skepticism," he added.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

Stokes issued his "fragile individuals" observation after his side were beaten in the second Test to go two matches behind.

The team afterwards went on a holiday to a Queensland resort between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Prior to this match, he revealed his players had held "honest" talks and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to stay alive in the series.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman stated the messaging from Stokes and coach McCullum had stayed consistent with their prior tenure in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, unchanged," said the opener. "It's on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. We believed we were capable of something special entering this game."

Australia Close of Rapid Ashes Triumph

Crawley's dismissal late on Saturday was part of a decisive triple-strike by Australia spinner Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Stokes himself – left the chasing side six down for 207 chasing a notional target of 435.

This means, the home team need four wickets on the final day to move to an insurmountable three-nil lead after three Tests.

A loss would prolong England's winless run in this country to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth successive overseas Ashes series loss.

This series is set to be decided in just eleven days of play – after England fell the first two Tests in two and four days each.

Not since 1921, when the Australians completed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the urn been decided more swiftly. The hosts have also won in eleven days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"This is disappointing," said the batsman. "We came here to win the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel now."

"There remains plenty to play for and we will certainly approach it with that mindset," he continued.

"It's been difficult. They're a formidable team. It was inevitably tough coming here against them. They were the favourites and they've proven why."

Pope's Position In Question

Although Crawley's performance in the third Test probably answers doubts about his immediate future in the England team, Pope appears under threat for his spot in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 in England's second knock on Saturday, extending his poor record versus the old enemy.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has failed to score a half-century and averages 17.62.

A solitary other England player in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has featured as many times in the top order in the Ashes and recorded a poorer average.

But, Crawley said any suggestion Pope is under the microscope originates with "the media" – referring to the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"We all know of his considerable talent," added Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year if I'm honest."

"He has played some really good knocks. This is noise externally. There is no chat like that on Ollie amongst the players," Crawley finished.
